Bob Priest's African Adventure

On July 28, St Matthias' parishioner Bob Priest was one member of a four-person team which set out on a four-fold mission trip to Kenya. Others on the team were Frank Bain (Director of the Dallas/Fort Worth Renewal Center), Pamela Hill (Diocese of Fort Worth), and Deacon Ann Richards (Diocese of Fort Worth).

The first stop was to visit the Maseno Orphanage for the Deaf and Blind, an orphanage sponsored by the Anglican Church of Kenya and directly supported by the Diocese of Maseno South. Here, over two hundred orphans are cared for. The children are also taught a trade (such as carpentry for the boys and sewing and clothes design for girls) so that when they leave the school, these young adults go out into the community not only with an education but also a trade. The orphanage also makes many of the school uniforms for the Diocese, and their furniture is sold at the school and on the Cathedral grounds. Children at the orphanage are being sponsored though the Episcopal Renewal Center. Interested parties are encouraged to sponsor a child at the low rate of $50 per month.

The next stop was to work on a water well that Bob Priest's team drilled in 2004. Necessary repairs were made to this invaluable gift which provides a Kenyan village with clean water.

Then, the team was off to participate in Cursillo Number Four in Kenya. This spiritual renewal program was taken to Kenya three years ago and since has expanded into neighboring dioceses. Over seventy participants were in attendance (two of them bishops), representing four dioceses. Plans are already being formulated to sponsor Cursillos in the other African dioceses.

P
hase four was a project for Bob Priest alone. When the other three members of his team returned home from Kenya, he proceeded to Uganda and the Diocese of Namarimbi to conduct training on a ministry of healing. Over sixty-five clergy attended the five training sessions which acquainted them with this ministry.
